This past weekend, Husband and I decided to take a random trip to Kentucky. Sometimes it is just nice to get out. Especially get out of southern Illinois.
I had my Zumba class Saturday morning (I'm addicted to exercising at this point...) so after class I went home, showered, packed and finally woke up Husband. He took forever to get ready! I was anxious to get on the road and get to the hotel to take a nap. HA!
We originally planned on going to Louisville. My husband, the sheep farmer/baseball fan, goes there every year for sheep shows and loves the Louisville Slugger museum. I like baseball. But I really don't care about baseball bats. I mean, come on...he doesn't care what shoes I wear... So, I said no. I wanted to go to Owensboro. Less to do but an hour closer.
Okay, so the real reason we wanted to go on a mini vacation is because I got really hungry for my favorite restaurant. It's called Zaxby's. For you southern folks out there, ya know what I'm talking about. Delicious, addictive Zaxby's. There is nothing quite like it. I am infatuated with their buffalo chicken fingerz. I can't find a hot sauce to compare. And as it is a southern thing, it's not easily available in this area. People think we are "southern" here. But. Uhm. We aren't. But Zaxby's is getting closer! I didn't know there was one only two hours away! I thought the closest one was Louisville. I got all excited and started yelling to Patrick when I saw where Owensboro was in comparison to Evansville, IN (we shop there often).
Anyway, our journey started off slow. I could barely keep my eyes open so I made Husband drive. I figured it was a straight shot to Evansville so he would be fine. As soon as I started to fall asleep it was "Where's your cruise control?", "How do I use it?", "It, won't work! Oh! That's the windshield wipers!", "Was that the Evansville exit?! Oh, wait, we aren't in Indiana yet..." I finally gave up and took over after I told him I had to pee and he waited 20 minutes and 6 gas stations till going to a Burger King in the ghetto on the opposite side of the highway. Sheesh. Men.
Most of the trees are still bare but many have blossomed. It is so beautiful around here right now, especially a little south when we headed into Kentucky. I'm not sure what the white flowering trees that have bloomed right now, but they are gorgeous! I don't think they are dogwoods, because I'm not sure they have bloomed yet. And it's not Pear, because they bloom and disappear so quick you barely know it has happened! I really do love spring.
I started noticing the fields along the highway were just glowing purple! I finally had to pull off the road to get a better look. Patrick's mom said it is a perennial called Hen Bit. I don't care what it's called. It is mesmerizing. I don't think I have ever seen anything quiet like it. With a back drop of browns and grays, that purple just glows. A few fields were outlined with some fresh green growth (Patrick said Alfalfa...?) so they just vibrated with color. I stood there being hypnotized by the color until a man on a motorcycle came by and thought our car was broken down...
When we finally made it to our hotel I did take a nap. By the way, the Comfort Suites in Owensboro have the most comfortable beds I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping on. Oh, they were heavenly! But, I didn't get to sleep long before Patrick was waking me up ready to go eat dinner. I started cheering when I saw it. I can say this, the Zaxby's employees in the real south are a lot friendlier. Regardless, I got me some Zaxby's. With every burning bite I squealed with delight. Okay, not really, but I wanted to! My taste buds were just going into a frenzy! The rest of the evening was uneventful. We shopped and played with cats at a pet store and Patrick ahd to talk me out of bringing all of them home with me. When we got back to the hotel, I pulled out the ironing board and set it up at the end of the bed. You know how most hotel rooms have a table in it? Yeah, not this one. So I made a table. And sat right in front of the TV and finished my Zaxby's. Hell yes.
The next day we went and bought a cooler at Wal-Mart and a whole lot of chicken fingerz from Zaxby's. I still have some in the refrigerator. I want to savor them and make them last but I'm thinking they need to be eaten before it is too late for them.
On the way home we stopped at the John James Audubon State Park. I did not see a single bird. It was actually kind of boring. And windy. We walked around and looked at sticks and some old decrepit buildings and then found the museum.. I didn't feel like going in so we just wandered around outside it. That is where we discovered the tulips that had already blown! Out tulips don't even have buds on them yet! And the hyacinth! Oh my goodness! It smelt so delicious. Even though I so no birds, I did see bumble bees. Lots of them.
We drove home on all country roads just for some different scenery. And we found different scenery. We went through a town called New Harmony. I wish we would have had time to stop and explore. It's just a cute little main street town. The buildings were all trimmed in bright colors and every house had spring blooms filling the yards. I might even be happy living there. We had to take the New Harmony Bridge to get into Illinois. That is the scariest bridge I have even been on. I actually stopped on it to take a picture of the top. Luckily there were no cars. Luckily there were no cars I passed at all on the bridge. I may have drove off. It was so narrow! And the bridge was so patched and pot holly it was a wonder it was standing at all!
And then we were back in southern Illinois.
Until next time...The Magniloquent Mary.
